4-year-old girl came to me, “piggyback please” as soon as I said “good morning” in the morning. The child is so powerful even morning. It’s a common situation for au pairs, the host family suddenly leaves without saying anything, wondering what to do with this time—something that happens to me occasionally. I try to do things like folding laundry and tidying up whenever I can, but to be honest, I’m in a bit of trouble, even though it’s unavoidable.
After the family back,I played sandpit with a 2-year-old boy. He played pretend play with toys, and when I asked him, “Can I have 〇〇?”, he would excitedly hand me dishes or food, which was so cute. When I made handprint stamps in the sand, he showed interest and imitated me, and messed up the handprints. It’s typical two-year-old behavior. Even when his dad called him for dinner, he burst into tears because he still wanted to keep playing.
The 4-year-old girl is interested in counting in Japanese since I taught it, and practiced together today too. She always skips 3 and 4, but she remembers everything except them; it’s amazing. She asked me to write something in Japanese, so I taught her some greetings and showed her pictures of Japanese food and scenery from my camera roll. I’m so happy that she is interested in my country. I think it’s wonderful that they have the opportunity to be in touch with a different culture at a young age. It’s a great environment for children. I hope I can contribute to that in some small way.
朝起きておはようと言った直後に「おんぶしてー」と言いにきた。子どもってほんとに朝から元気。お昼はファミリーがお出かけしてて、仕事時間何も言われないで急に出かけてしまって何しようってなるのはオーペアあるあるだと思うけど、たまにそういうことがある。洗濯物畳んだり整理整頓したりできることはなるべくするけど、仕方がないとはいえ、ちょっと困るのが本音。
ファミリーが帰ってきた後は2歳の子と砂遊び。おままごとの道具があるから、一生懸命何かを作ったり、私が「Can I have 〇〇？」と問いかけたりするのに対して目を輝かせて反応して、お皿や食べ物を渡してくるのが可愛かった。砂の上で手形スタンプをすると、興味を示して真似をしたり、手形スタンプしたところをわざとぐちゃぐちゃにしてきたり2歳って感じの遊びだった。ディナータイムで呼ばれても、まだ遊びたい気持ちの方が強くて大泣きしていた。
4歳の子は日本語の数字を教えてから興味津々で今日も一緒に練習した。３と４がいつも抜けてしまうけど。それ以外はほとんど覚えていてすごい！日本語で何か書いてと言われて挨拶を教えたり、私のカメラロールを見ながら日本食や日本の風景を見せたり、自分の国に興味を持ってくれて嬉しい。小さい頃に異文化に触れる経験があるって羨ましいし、子どもにとっていい環境。その力に少しでもなれてたらいいな。
