When they seem not to eat breakfast, I ask them, “What are we gonna do today?” and “What are we gonna make?”.I often find that saying, ” make it together after you have breakfast and get a dress!” helps them move smoothly into action. It was the same when I did my childcare training in Japan. Having a clear idea of the next activity helps children take action on their own. Today, we decided to make heart rings, and they immediately got to work. They were happy when they made several out of origami. They asked their mothers, “Do you like these rings? How much do you like them?” They were so honest and cute! We went to the beach again this afternoon, and they seemed to be having fun playing. A 4-year-old girl suddenly started saying numbers in Japanese, and when I pointed to them, she could say numbers from 1 to 10 in Japanese! Today is Friday, so we had fish and chips! We all made them after we got back.
Today is the halfway point of my au pair life. I only have one and a half months left. Thinking about the time we’ll be saying goodbye makes me sad, so I want to do everything I can.
朝ごはんをなかなか食べる様子がない時は、今日は何する?何作る?と聞いてみて、「朝ごはん食べて着替えしたら一緒に作ろうね」というとスムーズに行動に移せることが多い。日本で実習に行った時もそうだったけど、次の活動に見通しを持てると子どもたちは自分から行動に移すことができるようになる。今日はハートの指輪作るってなってからすぐに動いていた。折り紙でいくつか作ると大喜び。ママに「この指輪好き?どれくらい好き?」と聞いていた。素直で可愛い!午後は今日もビーチに行った。楽しそうに遊んでいた。急に日本語で数字を言い始めて、指で示してあげると1から10まで日本語で言えるようになっていた!今日は金曜日なのでフィッシュアンドチップス!帰ってからみんなで作った。
今日でこのオーペア生活が折り返し地点にきた。後残り1ヶ月半。別れが来ることを考えると寂しくて、できる限りのことはしたいなと思った。
